Delegates will be engaged in learning life-long leadership skills, catching the enthusiasm of this dynamic organization, meeting like-minded students from around the world. Every student who attends this interactive academy will leave with not only the knowledge of leadership and chapter management skills but with a new spirit and outlook for involvement in DECA and any career path. Students attending the academy may not participate in ICDC's competitive events program, but will have a slight advantage during officer election season!
Delegates will have to pay the same ICDC registration price to attend. Interested? Email mvdeca@gmail.com for more information on how to be selected!

2012 State CDC Registration!
Jan 18, 2012
Shalom MVDECA,
As promised, States registration is available now and will be due in a week (Wed, Jan 25th)! Since States is in Irvine, CA this year, we will be taking busses down to the conference as a chapter. Seating on the bus is limited and attendance at study sessions, performance at NorCal, and the date we receive your written forms are all criteria we will be using to narrow down our final list of conference attendees. That being said, we will try to take as many people down to Southern California with us as possible.
Understand that States will be much more difficult competitively than NorCal. Please continue attending study sessions (or begin attending...) in order to guarantee your competitive success.

Important Files
- MVDECA StateCDC Registration Forms.pdf | This must be filled out, signed, and returned no later than Wednesday, January 25th at lunch.
The entire document can be filled out on your computer except for signatures. Please type in all the information you can, print, and sign. This will help us in entering your registration information. - MVDECA StateCDC Information.pdf | This does not need to be printed or returned. Please read over the Code of Conduct; if you sign the registration forms, we assume that you understand and agree to the conditions spelled out there.
- Chaperone Forms StateCDC.pdf | This form should go to your parents. As always, we need chaperones; if we do not get enough, we will have to cut people based on NorCal performance. Please let your parents know that this form can be filled and submitted electronically. Chaperone forms can be sent to mvdeca@gmail.com
Now that NorCal is over, this is your chance to change events and/or partners as applicable. Talk with one of the officers on Saturday for more information and advice. Ultimately, it's your decision. No officer will force you to do any event. Remember that if you change to an event you are not interested in solely to avoid competition, you may not be able to prepare and perform as well as you hope.
Regarding partners: as some of you may have discovered, your best friend may not be your best partner. Now is the time to figure out if you want to keep your partner(s) from NorCal.
Study Sessions
Going forward, you can expect a study session almost every Saturday, usually from 10:30am to 3:00pm. Check our website and/or the Weekly Updates for exact times and locations for those. As we approach States, we will be getting more serious with study sessions. At the same time, you need to take a proactive approach with your preparation. There are more than 320 of you (from NorCal); it is not humanly possible for your officers to look over your shoulder and make you do a roleplay or check on your plan every week. Take initiative and ask an officer for a test, to judge a roleplay, and/or review your plans. If you miss a study session, find out what you missed.
1st States Study Session | Jan 21, 10:00am-3:00pm, Monta Vista Library
See member email for more details.
Congratulations!
Jan 16, 2012
Congratulations on your outstanding performance at the 2012 NorCal Career Development Conference. The total distribution of wins are as follows:
| Placement | Total from Monta Vista | Total Percentage |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | 20 | 52.60% |
| 2nd | 22 | 57.89% |
| 3rd | 13 | 34.20% |
| Total | 55 | 48.20% |
To students who did not do as well as they hoped at the conference, please do not be discouraged. The officer team will be reviewing score sheets for the next week to determine areas for improvement, and you can be sure that we will be updating our competitive preparation program to prepare you for States. Remember, states is a completely new conference. You can participate with a new team, in new events, with new plans; so use NorCal as motivation to be successful at States! That being said, understand that it will take effort for you to be successful at states. This won't be a walk in the park for anybody. Upcoming Events

REMEMBER THAT ALL WRITTEN PLANS ARE DUE THIS SATURDAY BY 10:30AM AT MOCK NORCAL. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO TURN IN PLANS/HAVE YOUR WRITTEN STATEMENT OF ASSURANCES SIGNED IF WE DO NOT RECEIVE YOUR PLANS BY THIS TIME. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DRIVE UP YOUR PLANS NEXT FRIDAY, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO TURN THEM IN.
Competitors Arriving Late to NorCal
If you will not be able to arrive at NorCal in time for testing at 3:00pm AND you have a legitimate excuse as to why (i.e. you are on an athletics team playing a game on Friday night), please register here. This will allow you to check in at NorCal late and make up missed tests on Saturday. If you're not sure that your excuse pans out, email us and let us know more details.
Mock NorCal Reminders:
Written Plan Turn-In: This will be from 10:00am - 10:30am at the front of the library. Please hole punch and bring in your written plan along with a filled out Written Statement of Assurances. Check to make sure your plan will not receive any penalty points by referencing this Powerpoint presentation. Members who need to turn in written plans, but do not want to register to present can come at any time between 10:00am and 10:30am to drop off their plan, no registration necessary.
Testing: If you are testing at Mock NorCal, you are allowed to bring and use a basic four function calculator. No scientific or graphing calculators are allowed. Please bring your own pencil as well.

Let us know if you have any questions. Otherwise, good luck at (Mock) NorCal! Expect more details soon about NorCal CDC itself.

You can hang out with your fellow DECA members in the adjacent Christmas In The Park (tons of attractions and vendors) or neighboring downtown shops and restaurants. (Hint: ask an officer, ex. Alok, to take you DECA attire shopping!) Bring all your friends and get ready to have a blast!

Now that we are done with NorCal registration updates, emails can finally be a little shorter:
Study Sessions Plans for Winter Break | 12.5.2011 - 1.2.2011:
There will be no study session this Saturday, December 10th so that we can all study for finals (woo)! However, we will be having study sessions at the Monta Vista and Cupertino library over Winter Break for competitors who will be in Cupertino. Keep your eyes open for more updates about our upcoming sessions over break.
On Saturday, January 7th we will be holding a mock NorCal conference at Monta Vista that will be almost exactly like real competition. You will be expected to submit a completed written plan and dress in full formal for this event. Written plans for NorCal will also be due on the day of the mock conference. Make sure you keep this deadline in mind as you prepare over Holiday Break. We wouldn't want you to be disqualified (and neither would you) for not having your written plan turned in on time and correctly!
Written Event Changes for NorCal
Dec 1, 2011
Hello MVDECA members!
We would like to begin by congratulating Abhijit Kulkarni, Prem Nair, and Ameya Khare for qualifying for ICDC through the DECA Virtual Business Challenge by winning 1st in Western Region. You are truly an inspiration for all of us.
IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR ALL NORCAL WRITTEN EVENT COMPETITORS:
California DECA experienced a boom in membership this year (partly thanks to MV). As a result, they have changed the competitive event structure so that all Marketing Rep events (ADC, SEPP, FMP) and Professional Selling Events (PSE, HTPS) are now categorized as written events, alongside Operations Research and Entrepreneurship events. You may only compete in ONE written event. This means that if your 2 events are both written events (ex. HTOR and ADC), you may only compete in ONE!
We apologize for the huge inconvenience of this new rule! California DECA failed to alert chapters of its new competition rules for this year, and we discovered this rule just recently. The new "one-cluster-test-only" rule for testing events is still in place as well. If you have difficulties in choosing your events, please feel free to email any officer for guidance. Please email amanda.fong@mvdeca.org if you have already turned in your NorCal forms and need to adjust your events.
In other news...

Public Relations Project: Shopping Weekend
The Cupertino@Cupertino Public Relations Project team recently finished their first event, the Taste of Cupertino. It was a huge success, and Cupertino residents enjoyed tasting food from 13 different restaurants. Their next event is the Shopping Weekend where local businesses offer deals and discounts in Feb 2012 to encourage Cupertino residents to shop at Cupertino businesses. On weekends, members will be involved in meetings with Cupertino City Council, Chamber of Commerce, and Cupertino businesses. You will be designing websites, flyers and posters, preparing budgets, negotiating contracts, and persuading businesses to sponsor the event. Does this sound like something interesting to you? Spots on our Cupertino@Cupertino team are limited. To find out more or to participate, please email Shailee Samar (shailee.samar@mvdeca.org).
Turn in NorCal forms!
Nov 22, 2011
Happy almost-Thanksgiving Break! Due to the flip-block schedule on Wednesday and because we are so kind, we will not be having a member meeting this week.
NorCal Registration
*** Important: This year, California DECA may enforce a strict cap on the number of teams (10) from each chapter that can participate in a given event. What this means for our competitors is that we may have to limit the number of teams that sign up for any given event. If necessary, our decisions will be made by (1) attendance at study sessions and (2) date when ALL TEAM MEMBERS turn in their NorCal registration forms. Moral of the story (especially for people who haven't been attending study sessions)? Turn in your forms ASAP!
a. Hotel Rooming Assignments due Sunday, November 27
We are allowing you to pick your own roommates! Rules are as follows:
1) Up to FOUR people can sign up for a room together! You may also sign up in groups of 1, 2, or 3 and we will complete your room for you. However, rooms of less than 4 might be broken up.
2) Each group should fill out the google form ONLY ONCE. If you have made a mistake, email us at mvdeca@gmail.com and we will try to fix it
3) Room with your event partners if possible! This will allowed you to practice before competitions. (Co-ed groups being the exception, self-explanatory)
4) If you do not submit your rooming preferences by Sunday, November 27 at 10:00PM, we will choose your room for you! So don't be late.
GIRLS fill out this form.
GUYS fill out this form.
b. Registration forms and check due Wednesday, November 30
** Note this is a change from the previous email, but it is consistent with all registration material **
Attached to this email is the 2012 NorCal Registration Packet. READ THROUGH IT CAREFULLY. While filling out the form, be aware that most boxes can be filled on your computer. Please fill out the form before printing it so we don't have to deal with legibility issues.
Be aware of DECA's new rules for events with testing: you may only take a test for ONE cluster type! For example, if you would like to compete in a principles event (all have business administration cluster exam), then you may NOT compete in a Marketing Rep event (all marketing cluster exams). The fee of $165 covers rooming expenses and competition fees. If you have trouble paying the cost due to financial challenges, please talk to Mr. Schmidt in Portable 6.
c. Parent Chaperones/Judges needed!
Every DECA chapter requires a certain student to chaperone ratio. With such a large number of MV competitors, parent chaperones accompany us throughout the conference! We would like to invite interested Monta Vista DECA parents to chaperone students and judge the competitions. Chaperone lodging expenses are covered by MVDECA. If you would like to join us, please fill out the attached forms and bring them to Mr. Schmidt's room. We will confirm chaperon participation as soon as we receive your forms. Thank you.

Chapter Projects Update
If you attended the member meeting last week, you may remember that two chapter project teams presented: PRP and CSP. The last group, CMP, did not present, but you can get more information about them below:
Samyu Sridhar, Anna Aswadhati and Anjali Narula (MV 2014) will be leading this year's Creative Marketing Project (CMP) project! Their marketing campaign is for the non-profit organization, Free the Children. While the CSP and CMP teams will be coordinating several events together, the CMP project’s main goal is to make an effective and creative marketing campaign, while the CSP project aims to organize fundraising events for Free the Children. Some upcoming CMP events include a flyer contest and a raffle! Contact CMP2012@mvdeca.org to if you would like to get involved.
For those of you who did not attend last week's meeting, here is a overview of the other two chapter projects' goals for this year:
Janani Prasad, Manvita Tatavarthy, and Suruchi Salgar (MV 2012) will be organizing a Community Service Project (CSP) for Free the Children. This organization aims to stop the exploitation of children by providing healthcare and education. Some upcoming events include a garage sale and an entertainment night! Contact CSP2012@mvdeca.org for more information on how to get involved.
Shailee Samar, the Director of Internships (2014), is leading the Public Relations Project (PRP). The Cupertino@Cupertino project brings our residents and businesses together by encouraging residents to eat, shop, and celebrate in Cupertino! Any members can be involved in meetings with Cupertino City Council and Chamber of Commerce, interviewing and presenting to Cupertino business owners, preparing budgets and contracts, designing flyers that will be sent out to all 20,000 homes, and persuading businesses to sponsor prizes for upcoming events. By being part of this team, you will use your DECA skills in the real business world! Contact PRP2012@mvdeca.org if you have questions or are interested in participating.

We hope that everyone had a great weekend! A shout out to those who came to our Competitions Fair and explored the wide variety of events DECA offers. To those who didn't, you still have a few weeks to select events and teams. All the officers are here for you to consult in further event guidance. Here is the link to the national DECA's 2011-2012 complete event listing. Please look through the list of DECA events (returning members, there have been some changes made so make sure you are up-to-date!), and start planning and deciding which events you want to do.
3rd Member Meeting | Wednesday, September 21:
As always, our weekly member meeting will be taking place in Portables 5 and 6 this Wednesday at lunch. We will not be announcing our Member of the Month at this meeting because we would like to factor attendance at our member meeting and 1st study session (see below). However, we will be holding more than announcements at this meeting. For all members who missed the Competitions Fair or would like an even better look at events, Mr. Schmidt's room, Portable 6, will be holding a mini "Comps Fair" with event booths and officers for one-on-one event counseling. In a separate room, we will be holding various introductory speaking and DECA activities. If you have already chosen your DECA events, come and join us in a little friendly competition - winners will be receiving prizes! Don't miss out this Wednesday.

Competitions Begin!

Hello Monta Vista DECA members,
Beginning this week, we will be beginning preparations to reclaim our spot as the #1 competitive chapter internationally - here we go!
2nd Member Meeting | Wednesday, September 14th
MVDECA's 2nd weekly member meeting will be held this Wednesday at lunch in Portable 6. At the meeting, we will have a brief overview of DECA competition for those who want to have a head start on deciding what to do. For a more detailed introduction to competitions, see below. DeVry Entrepreneurship Challenge competitors, please be sure to attend because Apurv Gandhi will be presenting a crash course on Entrepreneurship and the DeVry Competition.
Competitions Fair | Saturday, September 17th 11 AM - 1 PM
Don't know exactly what a roleplay is (yet)? Never hear of an OR outside a hospital? Come to MVDECA's annual competitions fair! This competitions fair is designed to introduce new members to the various types of DECA competition. This will be a session for members interested in competing to get an in-depth look at our competitive program. Following a short presentation, you will have the chance to explore booths split by competitive category and be able to work with officers one-on-one to help you in making your event choices. We highly encourage all of our members to compete (winning is fun!), but note that this is not required as part of your membership.
1st Study Session & Member Barbecue | Saturday, September 24th
Study sessions are where we prepare our competitors to be successful at the regional, state, and international levels of competition. They include instructional presentations and activities along with direct feedback and guidance from Monta Vista DECA officers. If you plan to win in DECA competitions, you should also plan to attend as many study sessions as you can. For members who cannot attend one, two, few, or all study sessions, please remember that the study sessions are not mandatory. The curriculum we follow for the sessions is very dynamic and it involves a lot of personal interaction between officers and teams. As a result, if you miss a study session, you are missing out on time to get personal help, instruction on some core principles, and time to practice your competition. The final point is the most important as most of our successful members improve through practice.
The basic competitive knowledge that we teach at our study sessions will be, to a large extent, available through our online website under "Members > Competitor's Corner". These resources include example plans, practice roleplays, marketing textbooks, and practice tests. Access to this section will be through a unique username and password that our members will receive at the 1st Study Sessions or by emailing mvdeca@gmail.com after 9/24/11. We choose to protect our resources because other DECA chapters have, in the past, attempted to copy our materials and redistribute them to their members. In addition, members will be given Competitions Binders at the first study session that includes guides on every DECA competitive event and core marketing concepts. To those who cannot attend the session, soft copies of the binders will be available in the Competitor's Corner.
Although you can generally "make up" whatever instruction was given at any given study session - the practice, preparation, and personal help time cannot be so easily made up. Therefore, we strongly recommend that members attend as many study sessions as they can. If you ever feel like you are behind or you need help, please feel free to contact us and we will work to help teach you the material personally at a study session.
That said, we do plan to start our studying with some celebrations, so we will follow our first study session with our annual member barbecue. The barbecue will include food (vegetarian options will be available), along with activities which will help you meet your officers and each other! Members who are unable to attend the study session are also invited to attend the barbecue. This will be a great opportunity to relax after your first DECA study session and hang out with your friends. We hope to see you take your first steps towards competitive success!
As a final reminder, DECA member meetings are held every Wednesday in P6 at lunch.
If you have any questions please email us at mvdeca.org. Have a great week!
